The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games offers a wealth of opportunities for businesses, large and small, across the whole of the UK including firms in Yorkshire and Humber.
Sportworks, based in Sheffield, won the contract to provide event management services for the Shooting Test Event, part of the London Prepares series of events being used as the official sports testing programme in the build-up to London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The event also has full World Cup status and is expected to attract over 800 athletes from across the globe. Sportworks will also manage all aspects of transport, travel and accommodation for the event and will oversee a detailed monitoring and evaluation process leading to a final report.
The company, established to provide services to sporting bodies in the UK and abroad, has four members of staff based in the UK office with another member of the team based in the US to explore further opportunities. As the Games approach, the Sportworks team will expand significantly with up to fifteen members of staff contracted to work on the project.
The contract was posted on the CompeteFor system, a brokerage service between buyers and potential suppliers. CompeteFor enables businesses to learn about the business opportunities stemming from the London 2012 Games and provides access to business support services.
By publishing their company profile on CompeteFor, Sportworks were able to keep up to date with opportunities and ultimately tender for this contract allowing them to get involved in such a prestigious and exciting project.

“We’re delighted to have won this contract with LOCOG which is a huge boost for the business and clear recognition of our ability to deliver major projects on a global stage”.
Tom Wenham, co-Director of Sportworks comments:
“Winning this contract has bought significant benefits to our business enabling us to continue our expansion and take on more staff. We expect to have at least one other full-time member of staff from September 2011 onwards with further staff being contracted closer to the event. The work with LOCOG has already had a direct impact on the company as we’ve been able to win the contract to deliver the General Assembly for the International Shooting Federation. This meeting, held every two years, will be coming to London in April 2012 and will attract representatives from every shooting nation in the world.
“The contract also enables us to raise our international profile which will be particularly beneficial with our plans to increase our overseas contracts.”
